The drive
The A23 drops some 800 m in the 27 km from Ella to Wellawaya, passing Rawana Falls beside the road. From Wellawaya the A2 runs south across the dry plains towards Hambantota; the car joins the Southern Expressway near its eastern end, follows it west for some 75 km and leaves at the Matara exit at Godagama, taking back roads to Mirissa.
On the way
Just south of Wellawaya a side road leads to Buduruwagala, where seven figures are carved into a rock face, the tallest some 16 m high. Travellers who want a safari can break the ride at Yala (Tissamaharama), a short detour from the A2.
