The drive

Google’s route does not go over Nuwara Eliya. It leaves Kandy to the east on small roads through the hills, follows the B492 for more than 50 km, then takes the road from Mahiyangana towards Badulla and climbs the last stretch to Ella. The road has many bends and some narrow stretches.

Car or train?

The train through the tea country is a highlight for many travellers, but reserved seats are often sold out in the season, and all luggage rides with you. By car you leave when you like, door to door. Travellers who want to see Nuwara Eliya on the way can book two rides instead: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, then Nuwara Eliya to Ella.

From Ella

The next leg usually leads down to the coast: Mirissa and Arugam Bay are each about three hours away.
