The drive

The route follows the Colombo-Puttalam road (A3) north from Katunayake into Negombo. It is a busy town road, with buses, three-wheelers and shops along most of it, which is why 14 km take about half an hour.

Where the hotels are

Most beach hotels stand north of the town centre, along Lewis Place and Poruthota Road at Ethukala. The town itself sits on a lagoon: the fish market at Lellama, the old Dutch canal and St Mary’s Church, one of the many churches that earned Negombo the name “Little Rome”, are all close to the centre.

Flying out early?

From a Negombo hotel the airport is about half an hour away, the shortest ride of any on this list. The ride back is booked the same way, with the hotel as the pickup place.
