The drive
Google’s route follows the A6 for most of the way: through Kurunegala, Dambulla and Habarana, then across the dry zone past the Kantale reservoir to the coast.
Arriving in Trincomalee
The town stands on a large natural harbour, with the Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock above the sea. Most beach hotels are north of the town, at Uppuveli and Nilaveli; boats to Pigeon Island National Park, for snorkelling over its reef, leave from Nilaveli beach.
On the way, the A6 passes close to Sigiriya, a common first stop before the east coast.
