The drive

After the ring road around Colombo, the Southern Expressway carries the car past Galle, still inland. It leaves the expressway for the last stretch down to the coast at Mirissa, where hotels and guest houses spread along the bay and up the hill behind it.

Whales and surf

Whale-watching boats leave from Mirissa harbour early in the morning, mostly between November and April, the calm season on this coast. Weligama, with its surf schools and long sandy bay, is 6 km to the west.

On the way down, the expressway passes Galle, whose old fort many travellers keep for a day trip from Mirissa.
