The drive

The route takes the Central Expressway (E04) to Kurunegala, then the A6 north-east through Ibbagamuwa, Galewela and Dambulla. The country flattens and dries out as you go: paddy fields, reservoirs and scrub forest. At Dambulla the cave temple, five painted caves in a rock above the road, is about 20 km short of Sigiriya.

Arriving in Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a village rather than a town, with hotels spread among the fields and forest around the rock; others are near Dambulla or Habarana. The rock was the palace of King Kashyapa in the 5th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climb is easiest early in the morning, before the heat and the crowds.

From here, Kandy is about 90 km to the south and Trincomalee a little over 100 km to the north-east; both rides can be booked hotel to hotel.
