The drive

The car goes round Colombo on the Outer Circular Highway (E02), takes the Southern Expressway (E01) south and leaves it for the last stretch west to the coast. The old Galle Road along the shore runs through a string of towns; the expressway saves most of them.

Arriving in Bentota

The hotels line the beach on both sides of the mouth of the Bentota river; Aluthgama is the town on its north bank. Inland are two gardens many visitors make time for: Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa’s country estate on Dedduwa Lake, and Brief, the garden of his brother Bevis.
