The drive

The car joins the Central Expressway at Mirigama but leaves it again after about 17 km and crosses Kurunegala district on country roads, by Narammala and towards Wariyapola. At Padeniya it turns onto the A28, which runs some 80 km north through the dry zone, past paddy fields and village reservoirs, to Anuradhapura.

Arriving in Anuradhapura

The ancient city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the island’s capital for more than a thousand years. Its great stupas, Ruwanwelisaya, Jetavanaramaya and Abhayagiri, stand among parkland and old reservoirs, and pilgrims come every day to the Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment.

The sites are spread over several kilometres, so many visitors tour them by bicycle or by car. Clothes that cover shoulders and knees are expected at the temples, and white is customary. Mihintale, where Buddhism is said to have reached the island, is about 12 km east; Dambulla and Sigiriya lie to the south-east.
