The drive
The car spends about 150 km on the Southern Expressway, past Galle and Matara into Hambantota district. It leaves at the exit for Beliatta and Walasmulla and drives the last 11 km through Beliatta down to Tangalle.
Arriving in Tangalle
Tangalle is a fishing town with long beaches on either side and fewer hotels than the coast further west. At Rekawa, about 10 km east, sea turtles come ashore at night to lay their eggs, and a local conservation project takes visitors to watch.
The sea here is open and can be rough, with strong currents, so swim where the locals do. Mulkirigala, a rock temple with cave shrines and paintings, is a short drive inland, and Yala lies further east.
