The drive
The car rounds Colombo on the Outer Circular Highway and joins the Southern Expressway (E01), which it follows for about 80 km. It leaves at the exit signed for Hikkaduwa and covers the last 14 km on country roads by way of Baddegama, meeting the coast road in Hikkaduwa itself.
Arriving in Hikkaduwa
Hotels and guest houses line the coast road and the beach for several kilometres, from the town south through Wewala and Narigama. The reef in front of the main beach is protected as Hikkaduwa National Park; turtles often feed in the shallows there, and glass-bottom boats go out over the coral.
The beach season on this coast runs from about November to April; from May to September the south-west monsoon makes the sea rough. Galle and its fort are about 20 km further down the coast.
