The drive
The car leaves the Southern Expressway at the Galle exit at Pinnaduwa and follows the link road down to the coast, where it turns east onto the Matara road (A2). Unawatuna beach junction comes two kilometres later; the hotels are on the lanes between the main road and the sea.
Arriving in Unawatuna
A reef across the mouth of the bay keeps the water calmer than on the open coast, which has long made Unawatuna a favourite for swimming and snorkelling. On the Rumassala headland to the west are Jungle Beach and the white Japanese Peace Pagoda; Dalawella beach lies a short way east.
Galle Fort is about ten minutes away by car, close enough for an evening walk on its ramparts. Further east along the coast come Ahangama and Weligama.
