The drive
The Southern Expressway runs inland past Galle, and the car leaves it at the exit for Deniyaya, on the A17. From there Google’s route takes village roads through Wathawana and Ampawila and comes out on the coast road at Ahangama, less than 10 km from the expressway.
Arriving in Ahangama
Ahangama has grown into one of the island’s surf towns, with breaks for beginners and for experienced surfers along a few kilometres of coast, and guest houses, villas and cafés along the main road. The season here runs from about November to April.
Stilt fishermen, perched on poles above the shallows, are a common sight between Koggala and Ahangama, and Koggala Lake, with its small islands, is a few kilometres west. Weligama and Mirissa are a short drive east.
