The drive

The car stays on the Southern Expressway past Galle and leaves it at the exit signed for Kananke and Weligama. The last 7 km run south on the Weligama–Kananke road (B465) and reach the bay at the town.

Arriving in Weligama

The name means “sandy village”, and the bay lives up to it: a long curve of beach with gentle waves, lined with surf schools and board rentals. Out in the bay sits Taprobane, a tiny island with a single villa, built in the 1920s by Count de Mauny and later owned by the writer Paul Bowles.

Mirissa, with its whale-watching boats, is 6 km further east, and the surf beaches of Ahangama about the same distance west.
